My kids have been driving me nuts.

Newspaper pom-poms made on a rainy day.

And Beach House. Also good for rainy days and/or grumpy days.

Things That Make Me Smile: Icelandic Kids

December 20, 2009

glosoli

Have you seen this video by Sigur Ros? I have maybe five times now, because it is stunning. And makes me want to dress my children in traditional Icelandic garb. After all, my husband did live in Finland for two years, so there is a very obvious connection here, I’m sure you see.

And another thing that makes me smile: my poster getting a mention on the Smitten blog at Glamour.com and also at Design is Mine. What a surprise that was! Thank you ladies, and also to Tiffany A. for the heads up!

On Repeat: Portugal the Man

October 9, 2009

I heard them perform live on Morning Becomes Eclectic a couple weeks ago, and instantly fell in love with their sound.

As for the kids, their top songs right now are the Star Wars theme song and Ghostbusters.

Best cover ever?

September 4, 2009

Heard this on Morning Becomes Eclectic today and so glad I was able to find it, because don’t you hate it when you hear a song you like, and you’re madly writing down the lyrics on some scrap piece of paper while sitting at a red light, only to fail at finding the song through Google? There has to be a better way.

Anyways, this is Taken by Trees, covering Animal Collective’s My Girls.

Lykee Li has stolen my heart

July 24, 2009

However did I get by not knowing about the amazingness that is Lykee Li? Thanks for the tip, Ryan. I kiss you!

Above is a video of Lykee Li performing with Bon Iver. It is so good. And real. The perfect antidote to that inorganic thing Katie Holmes did on last night’s So You Think You Can Dance. I think they were calling it singing and dancing?

(Just realized one of the guys mutters an F-bomb at the very end of the song. Mentioning it in case kids are around.)

Still Night, Still Light

Au Revoir Simone’s new album is out. Still have yet to buy it, but their MySpace is updated with a couple new songs from their latest album. So excited to see them in a couple weeks! It’s been forever since I’ve been to a live show.

Dark Night of the Soul

May 18, 2009

cover1

NPR is streaming the album “Dark Night of the Soul” right now, a collaboration between Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse. Some of the artists on the album include the Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, and James Mercer of The Shins. If you’re a fan, make sure to check the album out on NPR, as it may not ever be released for sale. Let’s give it up to record companies! Not.

Pre-dinnertime crazies? This is how we do.

February 19, 2009

Around 5pm most days is our dance-off pants-off (if you’re Kai.) Because I say “No thanks” to cooking dinner while unhappy little people swarm about me in the kitchen.

In our current music repertoire:

Animal Collective
{video via Ashley at Bird on the Lawn}

Tilly and the Wall. Kai loves this video. LOVES.
{via My Yellow Balloon}

And if you like indie pop/electronica, check out Ms. John Soda and The Notwist.

The Temper Trap

January 19, 2009

Can’t get their song “Sweet Disposition” out of my head since viewing the trailer for 500 Days of Summer, one of the it films at Sundance this week. I will most definitely see it this summer (Zooey Deschanel = my girl crush, and should be yours, too), but hope it doesn’t get overhyped the way Juno was, which I didn’t even think was very good. There, I said it. Someone had to.

The Postmarks

I love this band. More music at their MySpace site.
