Come Thou Fount – Take One
September 21, 2008
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing is an old hymn that seems to have recently sprung back into popularity again. According to my brother, it all started with this amazing BYU performance. I probably shouldn’t have given you that link, because my piano-only arrangement pales in comparison. However, I was playing it last night and got a particularly good take, except for one thing: I didn’t have the metronome on. I can tell my timing is off, can you? I still need to do all the standard mix-down and mastering stuff, so it might sound quiet, tinny, and muddy, but I just thought I’d throw this out there to see what people think. Comments welcome, please!

Even with some background in music, I couldn’t hear anything wrong with it! Of course it’s hard to hear mistakes with such a beautiful song and arrangement. Great job Ryan, you need to make a CD. Seriously.
I so agree with Lindy-
you need to make a CD! I have been desperately wanting a Ryan Kirk solo piano only CD ever since I heard you play in SLO 3rd ward (before your mission, I believe). It was mesmerizing- as is this! LOVE IT! Can I be one of the first to purchase a CD from you… please- I will listen to it 24/7 and it will make me so happy. You think I am kidding?! I am completely serious. For now, i will just have this song playing constantly. You made my day. Your talent is truly amazing! Thank you for sharing! For the risk of sounding even more like a crazed stalker fan, I will now end this comment:)
That is beautiful, Ryan. I loved hearing the piano in our home. The piano quiet now and I miss it.
Awesome! Put a link up to download it! Viral advertising.
A beautiful arrangement! This is my all time favorite hymn. You should truly consider making a professional recording.
Just in case anyone is curious the BYU performance was held in 1994 on April 8-9. You can get the video, DVD, or CD from byubookstore.com. It’s titled “A Thanksgiving of American Folk Hymns.”
you don’t know me, but i love your guys’ blog (via design mom) and i love this arrangement. i also play the piano and have been looking for a good solo arrangement of this song for YEARS. if you were to ever publish it, i would buy it!
Ryan,

I love this song, your arrangement is beautiful! It takes me back to Israel, it was one of the songs we sang when I was in our ward choir (no I really can’t sing, I just was attempting it) when i was going to school at BYU Jersusalem. thanks for the fond walk down memory lane. -keely
Beautiful. I always love that song. And perfect listening on a Sunday evening.
I found your blog through Design Mom. It’s always fun to find out who’s Mormon out there :)
wow, that is beautiful! perfect for a sunday, i have it playing while the monkeys are well, being monkeys. i am also mormon, live in cali and found your blog on design mom.
This was really beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.
Beautiful, peaceful, gentle, inspiring!
Wow Ryan! You are so talented. This hymn is amazing and I especially love this arrangement. Your Sunday performance was beautiful. I am often moved by music and this was one of those times. Thank you for sharing your talent with so many and with our ward in particular. I’m in awe.
I absolutely love this song too. Why oh why did they omit it from the current hymnbook? It’s absolutely riveting.
Wow! That is great… I love that old hymn. I really wish I knew how to play the piano like that. The only thing left from my piano lesson days is my sad version of Fur Elise. I don’t even know if I spelled that right!
I would sooo pay money for that track! And I would listen to it before and after I pray or any time I wanted to hear joy! That is one of my favorite (new) hymns. Bravo!
Simply beautiful. And yes it was the popular hymn when I was at BYU (’98-’02) but for good reason. Thanks for sharing.
Ryan-
to answer your question from your comment- I don’t remember exactly what I heard you play in SLO 3rd ward- I want to say it was a medley of: I Need Thee Every Hour, I Believe in Christ, and I Stand All Amazed, but don’t quote me on that. I just remember is was beautiful, amazing, and I felt the presence of the spirit so powerfully! Sorry I couldn’t be more help!
Ryan, I already knew you were a music genius, and this is just more proof. Beautiful. Seriously, when’s your CD?
I only found your blog today but I wanted to comment on this – your playing blows me away.
I’m not religious but this hymn has a lot of personal significance to me. The Sufjan Stevens version was playing at a pivotal moment in my life and so the tune is forever linked to a special memory.
I just wanted to say you did such a beautiful job. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, this is still amazing to me. My heart still bursts to hear it.
“Jesus sought me when a stranger… He to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood”
This beautiful song captures the heart bursting of that thought so well. Thank you so much for sharing! I cannot wait to hear it again, and absolutely would love to see a cd!
Is there a way I can get a copy of the sheet music? This is beautiful!! You did AMAZING!!
I have been looking for a the ‘right’ arrangement for this song for years and this is exactly what I’m looking for. I was just asked to play in Sac. Meeting and so once again, I started my search for an arrangement of this song. Good work!
This is what I’ve been searching for!You play beautifuly! I too have been searching for months for a piano solo to play in sacrement meeting, and I keep going back to try to find an arrangement of Come Thou Fount, but I haven’t found one that really makes me feel the spirit, until today. This is the only arrangement (except for the Tab Chior’s) that I have felt the spirit. You can really feel the humble plea to Heavenly Father in this arrangement. I’d really really like to get a copy of this sheet music! Please let us know if there’s any way we could get it from you!
Hey I loved this song, is there a way you could email it to me please, I would greatly appreciate it.
