Less than a month away (and teensy giveaway)

January 19, 2012

Even though Valentine’s Day isn’t as impressive of a holiday as Christmas and New Years, I’m determined to not let this one sneak up on me as the last two did! I came up with a cute idea for Kai’s class Valentines and pitched the idea to him. Thankfully, he’s on board (and not asking for something Transformers themed like last year) so we’ll be working on that soon. No last-minute scrambling/crafting here, no sir-ree!

Now, let’s discuss romance films. There are very, VERY few romance/chick flicks I’m able to tolerate. My short list of favorites reads Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrman version), pretty much anything Audrey Hepburn, The Notebook, Jane Eyre (LOVED the latest one), and…can’t think of anything else right now. Where do you stand on romance and chick flicks, and what are your favorites? Should I take Mindy Kaling’s advice and treat the genre as if it were sci-fi and enjoy by suspending all disbelief? I have an extremely low cheese threshold, so I think that’s my big hangup when it comes to anything starring Jennifer Lopez or Jennifer Garner, but cheese is relative and I’m sure there are many out there who think The Notebook reeks of Gruyere!

I’ve posted these little Moulin Rouge inspired Valentines in the past, but I’m re-posting the download here for the new year.

And I actually have a couple of 24-count packs left over from my Etsy shop days that I’d like to give away if you’re interested. Just leave a comment, and I’ll pick two winners a week from now!

And congrats to Jocelyn, comment number 40 and winner of the Paper Coterie giveaway!

I would have to add Katherine Heigl to your ‘can’t stand’ list.

That said, I will watch almost any chick flick. Some I love, some I love to hate and watch only to laugh at (Twilight I’m looking at you!)

Some of my favorites: The Holiday (with the except of Cameron Diaz), While You Were Sleeping, The Notebook, Crazy Stupid Love, Hope Floats, About A Boy. Not sure of the next two are classified as chick flicks but I love them: Stranger Than Fiction, Ghost Town.

I think Mindy is 100% correct!

I love the L’Amour valentines and am crossing my fingers that I win a pack!

I love You’ve Got Mail, or anything based on a Jane Austen novel.

My favorite romances are in the Jane Eyre realm. Morth & South and Wives & Daughters are long but good! Have you seen Strictly Ballroom? It’s another Baz Luhrman and any cheese is intentional. I love it. And I still think your valentines are brilliant.

My favorite quirky romance film is Danny Deckchair. For Asian films The Road Home and Eat Drink Man Women are good. Favorite classic is Roman Holiday.

I’m sure there are others, but those ones come to mind first.

These are so cute! I’ve got to say I’m not very picky abt. my chick flicks. I love them all once, but most are pretty forgettable.

Matthew McFayden as Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice (2005) makes me swoon.

Not a huge romantic over here, either.
Elizabethtown, Reality Bites and (500) days of Summer are favorites of mine. Apparently I am a fan of love stories involving moody, crazy girls and nerdy handsome boys. Ha!
    Love, Lindsay

Probably my favorite romantic movie is “First Knight” which was a (alright it’s pretty cheesy) remake of the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot story. Very good actors though–Sean Connery, Richard Gere, and Julia Ormond.
