Marimekko Holiday 08

December 2, 2008

I really love Marimekko. Here a few spreads from their latest Holiday Catalog. I’m especially digging on the plum + ruby red color scheme. What a visual treat. Those Finns are so impossibly cool.

And since we’re on the topic of things Finnish, did you know:
Ryan served his mission in Finland?
And that’s how we came up with Kai’s name? Because Ryan met a cool guy named ‘Kai’ on his mission (and not because we wanted his name to mean ‘ocean’ or ‘sea’ in Hawaiian as so many believe…)

I dated two guys at BYU who both served in Finland. It was so bizarre and random to me. Finland? Who goes there? Apparently quite a few….

While Ryan was on his mission I worked with an artist who requested some Marimekko fabric. I asked Ryan to find some. He was totally baffled. I found a store in Helsinki when we went to pick him up. “Oh, is that what you were talking about?” (Light bulb on.) It was hard to choose a pattern!

Doesn’t Kai mean shark in Finnish?

Actually, ‘kai’ in Finnish means ‘probably’. Shark is ‘hai’.

My sister-in-law served there (Mary Mudrick) and best friend from high school, Craig Sleight. Any chance your hubby knows either? (I found your site through Design mom and check in every once in a while).

    Hi Julie,

I asked Ryan and he said the names don’t ring a bell. But it’s such a small mission, it always seems to be worth asking.

One of my dear friends spent some time in Finland and she sent me the most beautiful angel ornaments. I love their style and the culture, although relatively unknown over here in America, is absolutely beautiful. I think partly due to Russian influence. I say that because I love the Russians too :)

Interesting, I wonder what they look like? Finnish and Russian design are just about polar opposites.
